From classroom to court: Malaysians who prove tomorrow begins today

In conjunction with National Day, Maxis showcases two inspiring stories of Malaysians shaping the nation’s future.

EVERY National Day, Malaysians are reminded through powerful storytelling of who we are and of the progress we can achieve together. These narratives go beyond stories – they reflect our hopes, values and the everyday courage that moves us forward.

This year, Maxis celebrates the journeys of people like edtech entrepreneur Khairul Anwar Mohamad Zaki and badminton champions Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah. Different paths, but one common truth: tomorrow’s progress begins with the steps we take today.

For Khairul Anwar, education has always been personal. His mother was a teacher, and growing up he saw first-hand how knowledge can change the trajectory of a child’s life. It is what inspired him to co-found Pandai, one of Malaysia’s fastest-growing edtech startups.

Launched in 2020, today Pandai has enabled over a million students to learn through gamified quizzes aligned to the national syllabus.

Powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning, the app personalises learning so that students – whether from city schools or rural kampungs – can discover their strengths and improve where they struggle.

“Education is freedom,” Khairul says. “The ‘tomorrows’ we dream of start with what we do today. My hope is that every Malaysian child grows up confident, curious and capable – not just excelling at exams, but successful in all areas of their lives.”

Khairul’s work is proof that when access to education is widened, opportunity follows. His journey also reflects what Merdeka truly means: that freedom to learn, to dream and to build a future is not bound by circumstance.

Unity in motion

On another stage entirely, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah are showing the world what it means to seize the moment.

The duo made history as Malaysia’s first women’s doubles semi-finalists at the Paris 2024 Olympics, are now ranked second globally and currently competing at the World Championships in Paris. But beyond medals, they are shaping the story of Malaysian sport itself.

Thinaah believes their partnership reflects the strength of Malaysia itself – built on unity, understanding and support. Every victory, she says, belongs not just to them but to the nation that cheers them on.

For Pearly, it is about giving everything for the love of the game. “Even when we are tired, we show up. Even when things get difficult, we keep going.”

The pair’s joint philosophy is clear: tomorrow demands commitment today. Together, they embody persistence, teamwork and belief. With every smash and every rally, they inspire the next generation to rise above barriers and dream bigger.

What connects Khairul, Pearly and Thinaah is not just talent or opportunity – it is the decision to act today for the sake of tomorrow. Whether it is revolutionising education or pushing boundaries in sport, their journeys remind us that progress is not accidental. It is built, step by step, moment by moment.

That belief is also at the heart of Maxis. With its fast, reliable and secure network, Maxis keeps Malaysians connected – to learning, to opportunity, to each other. Because every connection matters. From the profound to the personal, if it matters to Malaysians, it matters to Maxis.

In conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day, we’re reminded that dreams don’t wait. They grow with every step we take today. Khairul, Pearly and Thinaah show us that the future is built in the present – through courage, unity and the connections that carry us forward. Tomorrow begins today.
