AS THE reality of climate change sets in, economies are shifting towards greener practices, thus creating a growing market for jobs that can both mitigate environmental challenges and spur economic growth.

Malaysia’s commitment to its sustainable future is evident through initiatives such as the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, charting a path to nett-zero ambitions, and opening doors to green economic possibilities in sectors like electric vehicles and renewable energy.

With a projected RM1.2tril to RM1.3tril investment attracting 310,000 jobs by 2050, the Malaysian government is also ensuring an inclusive and equitable transition, supporting reskilling and community initiatives alongside its National Energy Transition Roadmap, which was introduced in 2023.

As such, Malaysia is now at the forefront of this green revolution. Testament to these and its other efforts, the country has been recognised as the leading nation in South-East Asia in the World Economic Forum’s Energy Transition Index 2023.

Global appetite for green skills

Green skills refer to the knowledge, abilities and competency required for jobs addressing environmental and sustainability challenges in a resource-efficient society, and are increasingly crucial across all job facets – from architecture to accounting.

This includes tackling waste management, resource conservation, building design, and eco-friendly production. The skillset required is diverse, encompassing not just technical know-how but also adaptability, creativity, and empathy.

However, the International Labour Organisation’s Global Employment Trends for Youth 2022 report further paints a bleak picture, with an anticipated 60% of young people lacking the necessary green skills by 2030, despite about 8.4 million new job opportunities emerging from the green transition.

TalentCorp recognises the growing importance of green skills in industries and its significance to investors for economic sustainability.

Hence it is organising the KESUMA Green Skills Fair 2024 with exhibitors such as the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) and the Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC) among others.
