Yu Jing smashes national record for debut bronze

BANGKOK: Tong Yu Jing pulled off a surprise in his debut SEA Games outing by smashing the men’s 50m freestyle national record en route to a bronze at Huamak Aquatic Centre tonight.

The 19-year-old Penang boy clocked an impressive 22.48s to clinch bronze behind Singaporeans Mikkel Lee (21.92s) and Tzen Teong Wei (22.42s).

Yu Jing erased the national record of 22.91s held by Bryan Leong last year. 

This is the second medal in swimming for Malaysia after Phee Jinq En took bronze in the women’s 50m backstroke event on Wednesday.
