PETALING JAYA: Rising young player C. Ameeshenraj captured his first title of the year after securing the Liverpool Cricket Club Open on Saturday (March 30).
World No. 134 Ameeshenraj overcame seventh seed and world No. 89 Viktor Byrtus of the Czech Republic 11-6, 11-3, 11-5 in a 32-minute final.
It was Ameeshenraj’s second Professional Squash Association (PSA) Challenger title after clinching the Tunku Muhriz Trophy in Seremban last year.
The unseeded Malaysian had beaten higher-ranked Egyptians Mazen Gamal (No. 71) and Moustafa Elsirty (No. 107) as well as Ben Smith of England (No. 70) en route to the final.
Ameeshenraj, 20, has been based in Bristol since last year and trains with compatriot and Asian Games champion Ng Eain Yow.
