PETALING JAYA: Veteran Hasli Izwan Amir Hasan’s hope to turn back the clock and qualify for the Hangzhou Asian Games (Sept 23-Oct 8) did not materialise despite putting up a decent showing in the Chia Woh Trophy.
The 46-year-old Hasli of Perak emerged as the newly-crowned champion after scoring 570 points in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol category at the National Shooting Range in Subang Jaya yesterday.
It was Hasli’s best result since the Hanoi SEA Games last year, where he scored 567 points to finish fourth, but he was in no mood to celebrate as his score was not enough for him to qualify for the Asiad.
Hafiz Adzha of Royal Malaysia Police took silver with a score of 563 points while Mohd Ridhuan Mohd of Armed Forces settled for bronze (563 points) after a tiebreaker.
The national meet was the last chance for Hasli, Hafiz and Ridhuan to confirm their spots in the Asiad, but only if they scored 581 points to qualify under category A or 577 for category B.
With yesterday’s results, none of the three of them qualified for the Hangzhou trip.
It was a bitter pill for Hasli to swallow, as he had went through blood, sweat and tears preparing for this tournament but was unable to reap the fruits of his labour in the way he had hoped.
“I was disappointed with my performance (yesterday),” said Hasli. “I tried my best to qualify for the Asian Games, but I fell short by only seven points. However, I have to accept the fact that this was my best result after last year’s SEA Games because I trained without sufficient resources.
“Among the challenges that I faced were the lack of bullets and lack of time for training.
“I was not in the National Sports Council programme since the rapid fire event was not featured in the Manila SEA Games in 2019.
“So, I had to practise at my own expense with limited equipment.”
Hasli made his maiden appearance at the Doha Asian Games in 2006 before featuring in the Guangzhou edition in 2010.
Meanwhile, Haritz Ikhlil Hessly Hafiz, who is representing KPT-Masum, continued to dominate as he scored a total of 246.5 points in the men’s 10m air rifle event to win his second gold.
It was double joy for Haritz as he also secured his ticket to the Asiad under category A.
Mohd Ezuan Nasir Khan of ATM scored 244.6 points to take silver and Melaka’s Ahmad Fahmi Ammar Rahim clinched bronze (220.5).
