(Reuters) - Simon Easterby will take over as interim Ireland head coach from December, the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) announced on Tuesday.

Easterby will take charge of the side while current head coach Andy Farrell leads the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia next year.

"Today's announcement ensures a smooth transition and continuity as Ireland looks forward to an exciting few months," IRFU director David Humphreys said in a statement.

"Over the past decade, Simon has moved from being a forwards coach to a defence coach and has played a key role in Ireland's success during that time."

The 49-year-old, who will also lead an Emerging Ireland tour of South Africa next month, said that it was a great honour to be asked to lead the Ireland team in Farrell's absence.

"There's a lot to play for between now and December and we're looking forward to giving the next generation of Irish players the chance to impress against talented international opposition in South Africa and then in the four Autumn Nations Series matches at the Aviva Stadium," he said.

The appointment will see Easterby in place for next year's Six Nations and the Summer Tour.
