PETALING JAYA: Hosts Selangor brought the curtain down on the Selangor Para Malaysia Games (Sukma) by emerging as overall champions for the first time.
Selangor amassed 93 gold, 55 silver and 52 bronze medals to celebrate a double, having also emerged as Sukma champions last month with 101 gold medals.
Sabah, who were the early leaders, finished as runners-up with a medal haul of 69-51-45, while Sarawak came in third with 52-32-54.
State youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said it was a memorable moment for the hosts when they surpassed the 60-gold target with two days of competition remaining.
"We overtook the previous record of 82 gold medals Sarawak won when they hosted the last Sukma two years ago.
"Swimming provided the biggest cheers to our contingent with 34 golds and several national records were also broken as well.
"This was followed by athletics (24), chess (11), tenpin bowling (seven) and lawn bowls (five)," said Najwan in pointing out the big gold medal contributors for the state this time.
Selangor swimmer Safwan Suhaimi and Sarawak athlete Noshazwani Maisara Marzuki were also crowned the best male para athlete and best female para athlete respectively.
Safwan, 20, bagged six golds and one bronze in the pool while Noshazwani, 22, claimed two golds and one silver in track and field.
Both athletes received RM5,000 in cash and a trophy each.
The Selangor Para Sukma featured 328 events across 10 sports, involving 1,352 para athletes from across the country.
Kelantan will host the Sukma and Para Sukma in 2028.
