PETALING JAYA: Two-time Paralympic champion Abdul Latif Romly is set to carry the Jalur Gemilang as he leads the national contingent at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow from July 23-Aug 2.
Alongside the five-time world para champion will be women’s lawn bowls athlete Emma Firyana Saroji, who has been selected to be the national contingent’s baton bearer during the opening ceremony.
The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) made the announcement after their annual general assembly at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) yesterday.
OCM secretary-general Datuk Nasir Ali said the flag handover ceremony will take place at the National Sports Council (NSC) on Thursday and will be officiated by Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohd Taufiq Johari.
At the same time, Nasir announced that Malaysia will be sending a contingent of 104 to Glasgow, comprising 59 athletes and 45 officials.
The Commonwealth Games will feature 10 sports, including athletics, swimming, track cycling, lawn bowls, boxing, judo, and weightlifting, as well as six para sports that will be contested in an integrated format.
At the previous edition in Birmingham in 2022, Malaysia brought home seven gold medals, eight silver medals, and eight bronze medals.
Meanwhile, Nasir also announced a contingent of 523 (347 athletes and 176 officials) for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games from Aug 19-Sept 4.
Malaysia will compete in 28 out of the 43 sports contested at the Games.
