PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has set a target of 200 medals at the Thailand SEA Games, which officially begins next Tuesday (Dec 9).

Chef de mission Nurul Huda Abdullah said the figure was a realistic one, decided after a series of discussions with sports associations during workshops with the National Sports Council on Oct 29, attended by all the national sports associations involved in the Games.

"Based on past results and the team's current form, we have set an overall target of 200 medals.

"We hope our athletes will remain focused and consistent throughout the Games and return with as many medals as they can," said Nurul Huda during the flag handing-over ceremony for the Malaysian contingent at Bukit Jalil on Wednesday (Dec 3).

Malaysia will field 1,142 athletes and 515 officials at the Games, making it the largest contingent the country has ever sent to the biennial event.

Malaysia has also named national long jumper Andre Annuar Annuar and waterski star Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah as flagbearers during the opening ceremony at the Rajamangala National Stadium.
