PETALING JAYA: In conjunction with the 68th National Day celebrations, the National Athletes Welfare Foundation (Yakeb) continued their initiative to honour the nation’s sporting heroes by visiting the families of former national athletes in the Klang Valley.

The visit, which also highlighted the spirit of patriotism and recognition of the athletes’ sacrifices, included the presentation of bereavement aid under Yakeb’s special assistance scheme.

Led by Yakeb chairman Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail, the delegation called on the family of former national hockey player Kevin Christopher Nunis @ Mohd Khairy Nunis Abdullah in Segambut.

Kevin, who was part of the national squad at the 1982 Asian Games in India, the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1986 Asian Games in South Korea, passed away on June 28. The contribution was received by his daughter, Yasmin Natasha.

Yakeb also paid tribute to the late Jasmi Baba, a former national cyclist who won a silver medal at the 1969 Asian Championships and competed at the 1971 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.

The foundation further honoured the memory of former national basketball player Ho For Sen, who represented Malaysia at the 1962 Asian Games in Indonesia. His younger brother, Ho Hon, accepted the contribution at their family home in 1Razak Mansion, Salak South.

Each family received RM3,000 in financial assistance.

"This visit reflects Yakeb’s concern and appreciation, on behalf of the government, for the sacrifices made by our former athletes," said Shapawi.
"Even though they are no longer with us, their contributions in bringing glory to Malaysia will always be remembered.
