PETALING JAYA: V. Thamaraj became the first Malaysian Indian to become a world silat champion, after winning the Putera Open Class (65-70kg) category in the 20th World Championship.

In the tournament held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Thamaraj beat Uzbekistani exponent Diyor Xudoyberdiyev in the final.
