Johor sets 70-gold target for Sukma 2024

JOHOR BARU: Johor is aiming to repeat the state's Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2022 success this year by setting a target of 70 gold medals.

Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said each athlete who brings home a gold medal from Sukma 2024 in Sarawak will also receive RM10,000 as an incentive.

“The Johor Sports Council (MSNJ) director Mohd Ekmaluddin Ishak set an initial target of 50 gold medals, but looking at our success in Sukma 2022, where we managed to bag 77 gold medals, this is too low.

“So this year I have set a target of at least 70 gold medals.

“The coach who manages to help an athlete get gold will receive RM5,000,” he said in his speech at the Johor Sukma Countdown themed “Sukma 2024: The Next Chapter” at Larkin Arena Aquatic Centre here on Tuesday (Feb 13).

For the group category, athletes will receive RM20,000 as an incentive, he added.

“We have about six months until Sukma Sarawak, so I hope our athletes will use this time to train and give their best for Johor.

“We have spent half a billion ringgit preparing the needed facilities and amenities to develop our athletes, and I hope we can realise this vision,” he added.

Events for Sukma 2024 in Sarawak from Aug 17 to 24 will be held in Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Serian, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu and Miri.
