PETALING JAYA: Sim Yip How is out to make the most of a rare opportunity to compete in the Asian Games in Hangzhou from Sept 23-Oct 8.
Xiangqi (Chinese chess) has only been held at the Asiad when China have been hosts.
So, national Xiangqi player Yip How, who won a bronze in the SEA Games in Cambodia in May, is thrilled to finally make his debut in the Games at the age of 39.
Yip How will be joined by Tan Yu Huat and Jee Xin Ru, who will both also be making their maiden appearances in the Games.
“Indeed it is a rare opportunity for all of us to compete in the Asiad and we are very honoured to be selected to represent our country,” said Yip How.
“Usually there is Xiangqi in the Games only when China were the hosts.
“Getting to compete here will benefit the popularity of Xiangqi in Malaysia.”
Yip How and Cambodia SEA Games silver medallist Yu Huat will compete in the men’s individual event while Xin Ru will see action in the women’s individual event.
All three will also combine for the mixed team event.
Malaysia face a tough challenge against the likes of hosts China, Hong Kong and Vietnam.
“We are fighting for the top four in the mixed team event,” said Yip How.
“In the men’s individual, I am aiming for a top eight finish.
“It will be difficult for us to win a medal as China, Hong Kong and Vietnam are very strong.
“I’m hoping for a good draw too.
“The draw will only be made on the eve of the tournament.”
Yip How was pleased with his preparations so far.
“My preparations are going well,” he said.
“I have been practising and studying my opponents’ games to better prepare myself.
“I’m also modifying some of my opening moves to try to surprise my opponents as I believe I have been too predictable before this.
“I also need to sleep well before the competition as when I lack sleep, I can’t perform well.”
