PETALING JAYA: Teo siblings Zun Jet and Sze Hui are hoping to make it a memorable debut in aquathlon in the SEA Games.
After all, they are the country’s first aquathlon athletes to compete in the biennial games after booking their berths at the NX113 aquathlon race in the inaugural SEA Open Water Swimming Cham-pionships in February.
Zun Jet qualified on merit after completing the race which comprises a 500m swim and 2.5km run, with a time of 16:12 to win the elite category while his elder sister and 18-year-old Sze Hui clocked 19:16 to finish fourth.
At only 17, Zun Jet knows that the whole world is ahead of him.
“I’m very happy to compete in my first SEA Games at this age. And competing with my sister has made it more exciting,” said the Form Five student.
“It’s a great opportunity to compete together in a major championship after years of training.”
While many find it hard to wake up before going to school, Zun Jet is up by 5.30am for his morning run.
“On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I run at 5.30am before I go to school,” he said.
“My swim training is everyday except on Sundays, with each session lasting around two hours.”
“During weekends, I also do a long easy run and sometimes, I will undergo aquathlon training on Sunday.
“If we have gym sessions, it will take around two and a half hours.’’
So far, he has been managing between sports and studies like a pro.
Zun Jet, who is currently competing in the Invitational Age-Group Swimming Championships in Bukit Jalil, said the preparation has been good.
“As I swim everyday, my progress is getting better day by day,” said Zun Jet.
“As for my run, coach Leow Wen Jun has been guiding me to improve on my strength, speed, power and endurance.
“The age-group meet is a good warm-up ahead of the Cambodia stint, and I will be more focused on training after this.
“The goal is to improve my personal best in the individual event and get the best result in team relay.’’
There are difficulties but it does not worry Zun Jet.
“There are some minor things, like muscle pain due to a hectic training schedule, but that is part of the training process, so it’s not a problem.”
Zun Jet will join Isaac Tan Zhen Wei, Shinozuka Mayumi and Siobhain Doyle Mei Li to form the aquathlon mixed relayteam.
