PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s hopes of getting the fifth gold were dashed after the women’s lawn bowls triples team of Nur Ain Nabilah Tarmizi, Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman and Azlina Arshad lost 9-17 to England in the final at the Victoria Park in Leamington Spa on Friday (Aug 5).
The Malaysians fought well but the English trio of Jamie Winch, Natalie Chestney and Sian Honnor shone in front of the home crowd with their superb shots.
After the first end, England took a 3-0 lead and widened the gap with another point in the second end.
But from the third to twelfth ends, the Malaysians showed great fight to take a 9-8 lead with skipper Azalina Ahmad proving to be a real cog with her breathtaking shots.
Then from end 13 onwards, it was all England as they collected nine points to seal victory in the women’s triples.
The Malaysian trio beat New Zealand’s Val Smith, Tayla Bruce and Nicole Toomey 16-9 in the semi-final earlier.
The last time Malaysia won gold in the triples event was in the 2006 Melbourne Games when Azlina, Nor Hashimah Ismail and Nor Iryani Azmi beat Australia in the final.
