PETALING JAYA: The national lawn bowlers continued to show they can be depended upon to bring glory for the nation after hauling in five gold medals to finish as overall champions in the Asian Championships in Henan, China.
Gold Coast Commonwealth Games gold medallists Siti Zalina Ahmad and Emma Firyana Saroji beat the Philippines 19-9 to win the women’s pairs gold yesterday.
Siti, who partnered Emma to triumph in the same event at the Commonwealth Games in April this year, bagged her second gold in the women’s fours event.
Siti, Auni Fathiah Kamis, Nur Fidrah Noh and Azlina Arshad overcame Hong Kong 10-8 in the final.
Kuala Lumpur SEA Games gold medallists Mohd Fairus Abdul Jabal, Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple and Zulhelmi Ridzuan rolled their way to the third gold for Malaysia in the men’s triples competition after defeating India 22-14 in the final.
Two more gold medals were won in the Under-25 ranks. Muhd Idham Amin Ramlan-Nurul Alyani Jamil beat Hong Kong in the final of the mixed pairs event.
Nurul claimed her second gold after beating teammate Nur Ain Nabilah Tarmizi in the girls’ singles event.
Muhd Idham Amin Ramlan failed to make it a double when he lost to Thailand in the boys’ singles final.
Malaysia also bagged seven bronze medals. Five came from seniors Zulhelmi Ridzuan (men’s singles), Muhd Syamil Syazwan-Fairul Izwan Abdul Muin (men’s pairs), Fairus, Izzat, Syamil and Fairul (men’s fours), Emma (women’s singles) and Auni, Nur Fidrah and Azlina (women’s triples).
Daeng Dhadyry contributed two bronze medals in the Under-25 boys’ singles and the mixed pairs with Nur Ain.
