PETALING JAYA: Wong Weng Son is now a world champion after winning gold in the men's jianshu (sword) event at the World Wushu Championships in Kazan, Russia on Sunday.
The Negri Sembilan-born exponent, a gold medallist at last year's Taolu World Cup and Asian Championships, posted 9.64 points.
South Korea's Lee Ha-sung took the silver medal with a 9.60 score, while Malaysia's Yeap Wai Kin finished third with 9.53.
The title means a lot for Weng Son as he only managed silvers in the jianshu and qiangshu (spear) events at the recent Kuala Lumpur Sea Games in August.
His teammate Tan Cheong Min capped a fine performance in the women's nangun (southern style) for the bronze medal with 9.59 points.
China's He Jianxin won with 9.62 points, followed by Indonesia's Juwita Niza Wasni with 9.60.
