SINGAPORE: National back-up doubles pair Lin Woon Fui-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari saved the blushes for Malaysia in the Singapore Satellite tournament following the mens singles shuttler Kuan Beng Hong's shock defeat in the final yesterday.
Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan defeated Indonesian Rendra Wijaya-Yonathan Suryatama Dasuk 15-8, 15-9 to win the men's doubles title.
There were high expectations in the men's singles but Malaysia failed to make it a double when the 20-year-old Beng Hong went down 12-15, 5-15 to Singapore's Kendrick Lee in the final because of a muscle pull.
It was a close fight in the first game with Beng Hong leading at 12-10. He then played too cautiously and the Singaporean came charging back to win at 15-12.
In the second game, Beng Hong suffered a muscle pull after trailing at 0-4. He never recovered and lost 5-15.
Malaysia also had a representative in the mixed doubles but Fairuzizuan and Ooi Sock Ai went down fighting 13-15, 13-15 to Indonesian Pribadi-Endang Nur Sugianti.
