Qayyim rules Sepang with perfect double to rev up title chase

PETALING JAYA: National rider Qayyim Razin Razali celebrated a perfect weekend at home at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) after taking back-to-back wins in the Moto4 Asia Cup.

The 13-year-old Qayyim clinched a double victory in the second round of the championship, improving on his 17th and 16th place finishes at the opening round at the Buriram International Circuit in March.

“I’m thankful to get this double win. I’m extra happy because this is my home race and I have proved that I am able to do it,” said Qayyim.

“I have to thank my parents for all their support. The struggles were worth it.”

Hauling 50 points from the weekend, Qayyim moved to fourth place in the championship, one spot behind compatriot Qabil Irfan.

Qabil, who finished sixth and second at Buriram, displayed strong pace at the home track after qualifying on pole for Race 1 on Saturday.

However, 14-year-old Qabil finished both races in third place.

Japan’s Kotaro Togashi finished second in Race 1, while compatriot Waku Kunitate took the second spot in yesterday’s Race 2.

Qabil currently has 62 points in the championship, just two points below Kunitate, while Japan’s Hayato Chishiki leads with 70 points.

The third round of the championship will head to Japan’s Mobility Resort Motegi from Oct 2-4.
