Qabil caps historic season with one more podium spot

PETALING JAYA: Young rider Qabil Irfan wrapped up a superb and historic season in the ESBK Talent (Spanish Superbike Championship) by stepping on the podium one more time at the final round at the Jerez Circuit in Spain over the weekend.

The 13-year-old, who was already crowned overall champion in the previous round at the Estoril Circuit in Portugal in September, rode his way to the podium after finishing Race 1 in third place.

Although Race 2 saw Qabil finish just outside the podium in fourth place, the young rider was glad to cap off the stellar performance this season, which saw him collect six wins, two second-place finishes, and three third-place finishes.

“Race 2 was tough from start to finish. I didn’t have the luck for the podium,” said Qabil.

“But I really enjoyed it because all the riders were aggressive and fast. I had a lot of fun.

“I want to say a huge thank you to all my sponsors for their support throughout the season, as well as my supporters.”

Meanwhile, Sepang International Circuit (SIC) Racing team manager Zulfahmi Khairuddin said Qabil’s performance this year in the championship was phenomenal as he became the first Malaysian to win the championship.

“The ESBK Talent season with Qabil has concluded, and it has been a very successful season for him,” said Zulfahmi.

“We won the championship, and congratulations to Qabil and his family.

“Thank you also to the VHC Team for always giving their best to ensure Qabil became champion this year.”
