PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Weiron Tan continued his winning streak at the Protyre Formula Renault Championship by winning two out of three races at Rockingham, England, over the weekend.
The 18-year-old, who is a member of the Caterham Racing Academy, started the weekend by securing pole position for all three races at the penultimate leg of the championship.
Weiron, a winner of the last three races at the previous weekend in Croft, took a lights-to-flag victory in Race 12. He also set the fastest lap time.
Weiron was even more dominant in Race 13, winning by a 5.3-second margin.
Bad luck, however, struck Weiron in Race 14. He was leading halfway through the race when he experienced engine problems and was forced to retire.
With the two wins, Weiron has consolidated his second overall placing in the championship with 297 points. Chris Middlehurst is at the top of the standings with 307 points.
“I would like to thank the team for doing a fantastic job,” said Weiron. “Everything went according to plan.”
He, however, expressed disappointment for not scoring another hat-trick.
“I was confident of winning Race 14. Unfortunately, we suffered engine problems.
“Looking from where we were at the start of the season to where we are now, I think the team and I should be very proud of the progress we have made so far,” said Weiron.
