Defender Syafiq makes strong presence on pitch

BUKIT JALIL: Put him anywhere on the pitch, and national hockey player Shafiq Hassan will find a way to excel there.

Defender Shafiq (pic) played his part in Malaysia’s 4-2 win against South Africa in the Nations Cup fifth to eighth classification match yesterday, and the 25-year-old said it was thanks to head coach Sarjit’s tactics.

“Sometimes I play further up ahead even as a defender, and I just need to give it my best even though my instincts as a defender are kicking in,” said Shafiq.

“This is modern hockey, where ideally every player should be able to play in all positions. Sometimes switching positions can help the team as well.

“We played as a team with determination to finish in the best possible position.”

Malaysia’s first goal came courtesy of Syed Mohd Syafiq Syed Cholan in the 15th minute, followed by Shafiq’s goal in the 37th minute, and the last two goals came from Akhimullah Anuar Esook (40th) and Fitri Saari (53rd).

South Africa’s two goals came from Angelo Walstroom in the 30th minute, and Carlon Metoor in the 51st minute.

Shafiq added that after being called back into the Speedy Tigers last year before the Azlan Shah Cup was a blessing, and he was not letting the chance slip away again.

“It’s a second chance for me. It’s a blessing. With this second chance, I am just doing my best,” he said.
