PETALING JAYA: Malaysia did not start off on the right foot at the Indoor Hockey World Cup as they were handed a thrashing by Germany on Monday (Feb 3).
Malaysia, making their first appearance at the World Cup, lost 4-12 to three-time world champions Germany in the opening Group B fixture at the Zatika Sports Centre in Porec, Croatia.
Germany’s Nicolas Proske and Ben Hasbach scored four goals each to give their team the extended lead, while Paul Dosch, Alec von Schwerin, Anton Boeckel, and Max Silanoglu scored one each.
Mohd Firdaus Omar and captain Najmi Farizal Jazlan scored one each for Malaysia, while Abdul Khaliq Hamirin scored two goals.
Malaysia managed to equal the score at 4-4 in the second quarter, but after which the German side ran away with the lead and took the three points.
In the other Group B fixture, Iran won 5-3 against Argentina.
Malaysia will play Argentina on Tuesday (Feb 4) and Iran on Thursday (Feb 6).
