Malaysia end Sultan of Johor Cup group outing without a win


PETALING JAYA: Malaysia have ended the Sultan of Johor Cup group campaign without a win.

The junior team, preparing for the Hockey World Cup in Kuala Lumpur from Dec 5-16, fought valiantly but were beaten 4-7 by Great Britain in their final Group B match in Johor Baru on Thursday (Nov 2).

Jacob Payton was the toast for the visitors, scoring twice in the 36th and 42nd minute. The other goals were scored by Matthew Hughson (Fifth minute), Ted Graves (Ninth), Ali Douglas (15th), Henry Markham (49th) and Rory Penrose (54th).

Faris Harizan impressed for Malaysia, scoring in the 22nd and 44th minute, while the other goals were scored by Andywalfian Jeffrynus (24th) and Harris Iskandar Osman (27th).

The Young Tigers played against Asian rivals Pakistan on Tuesday (Oct 31), losing 2-3.

Malaysia had also lost 2-3 to New Zealand and 1-3 to India in their previous matches in Group B and will head into the fifth to eighth-placing playoffs.
