Malaysia begin campaign with a huge win

KUALA LUMPUR: Defender T. Perabu scored a hat-trick as Malaysia began their campaign at the men’s Junior Asia Cup hockey competition on a high note after thrashing Uzbekistan 8-1 in Salalah, Oman on Tuesday (May 23).

Perabu netted his goals through penalty corners in the seventh, ninth and 18th minutes to produce a commanding performance in his debut in the tournament.

Four field goals were scored by Alfarico Lance Liau Jr (12th), Shahmie Irfan Suhami (26th), Mughni Mohd Kamal (43rd) and Adam Ashraf Johari (52nd) while Che Nur Aqilrullah Che Khairulzi Anwar slotted home a penalty corner in the 27th minute.

Malaysia are in Group B with South Korea, Oman, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan where two teams will advance to the semi-finals.

Malaysia will next play Bangladesh on Thursday (May 25).
