Shu Wai: Rachel needs to work on her confidence

WOMEN’s artistic gymnastics head coach Ng Shu Wai believed that Rachel Yeoh (pic) needs to work on her confidence if she wants to be on par with other elite gymnasts.

Shu Wai, in assessing Rachel’s debut at the Games, feels that there is still a significant gap between Malaysian gymnasts and other competitors, especially those from Europe.

The 23-year-old Rachel ended her challenge in the uneven bars, the only event that she took part in and finished 16th with 11.800 points on Saturday.

Shu Wai said that she failed to score higher due to a slight mistake in her routine during the team and individual qualification at the Arena Birmingham.

“Actually, we planned (for her) to qualify for the final. Unfortunately, she could not perform her best during the qualifying round,” said Shu Wai.

However, Shu Wai believes that Rachel gained invaluable lessons from her debut.

The former national men’s artistic gymnast also admitted that Rachel would need a year to take her game up a notch.

Meanwhile, Rachel described her experience in Birmingham as “amazing”.

“I thoroughly enjoyed every moment here,” she said.

Asked on her next move, the 2021 SEA Games gold medallist said that she would switch her attention to next year’s Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. — Bernama
