MGF suspend deputy president for being at drug party

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Gymnastics Federation (MGF) will not spare the rod when it comes to indiscipline – whether the guilty ones are athletes or officials.

The MGF disciplinary committee yesterday suspended their deputy president Kau Git Kaur with immediate effect after he was among 17 people picked up by police at a drug party in Puchong last Sunday.

The 53-year-old Kaur, who won an artistic gymnastics gold medal in the 1991 Philippines SEA Games, was arrested alongside Dengkil assemblyman Adhif Syan Abdullah and an officer with the Youth and Sports Ministry.

The MGF disciplinary committee, comprising MGF vice-presidents Kol. Al Hambra Tun Juhar (chairman), Dr Farah Hani Imran, assistant treasurer Datuk Shamrat Gupta and Terengganu Gymnastic Association president Abdul Razak Mat Amin relieved Git Kaur of his duties based on the MGF constitution.

“The committee have unanimously decided to suspend him as the deputy president and relieve him of all other duties until MGF’s internal investigation and the investigations of relevant authorities are completed,” said the committee in a short statement.

MGF president Rachel Lau said they viewed the incident seriously and will leave it to the authorities to probe the incident further.

“When officials or athletes are involved with drugs, it affects the image of the sport and this is a serious matter for us.

“Git Kaur seems to be intoxicated when he attended the MGF meeting last Saturday morning. He was rude and threatened several committee members during the meeting ... for now, we will let the authorities complete their investigations and MGF will have our own probe as well.

“Further action will be taken after the probes are completed.”
