MALAYSIA’S Foong Zi Yu captured the 40th Malaysian Ladies Amateur Open (MLAO) crown after a gripping three-hole playoff against compatriot Amberly Zaira Zamri at Glenmarie Golf & Country Club.
Foong, currently studying at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, secured her maiden MLAO title with a composed par on the third extra hole after both players finished regulation tied at one-under-par 215.
The victory was especially meaningful for Foong, who finished runner-up in last year’s 39th edition – testament to her determination.
“Amberly also delivered an excellent performance, forcing the playoff and highlighting the growing depth and promise within Malaysia’s women’s amateur ranks,” the Malaysian Ladies Golf Association (Malga) said a statement.
“This year’s MLAO attracted 120 players from 12 countries and territories: Brunei, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and the United States, reaffirming its status as one of the region’s leading amateur championships.
“Sanctioned as a World Amateur Golf Ranking event, the tournament continues to provide a vital international platform for emerging golfers to compete at elite level while earning valuable ranking points,” the association added.
The milestone 40th edition also marked a significant achievement for Malga, in that it is celebrating four decades of advancing women’s amateur golf and strengthening international ties through the sport.
This year’s championship additionally served as the official qualifying event for the Maybank Championship 2026 Asean Qualifier (starting Tuesday), with Foong earning an automatic berth.
