Jeneath leads Malaysia to their best finish at world amateur team meet

PETALING JAYA: Asia Pacific Amateur champion Jeneath Wong (pic) led Malaysia to secure their best outing in the Espirito Santo Trophy (women’s golf World Amateur Team Championship) after concluding the four-day tournament in 19th spot in Singapore.

The Malaysian trio of Jeneath, Foong Zi Yu and Charlayne Chong posted a four-day total of four-over 580to secure the top 20 finish.

Malaysia’s last participation was in Ireland back in 2018, with the previous best performance coming in 2012 where the team finished 25th in Turkey.

United States based golfer Jeneath emerged as the best individual performer after she finished 26th with a total of two-under 286 (73-71-70-72).

Cambodia SEA Games bronze medallist Zi Yu tied for a share of 50th spot on six-over 294 (75-71-74-74).

Charlayne placed 89th on 23-over 311 (78-78-79-76).

China’s rising amateur Xu Ying claimed the individual title with a fine final round effort of five-under 67.

The 16-year-old, already a two-time winner on the China LPGA Tour this year, finished with 13-under 275 (70-70-68-67) for a four-stroke win over Filipina Rianne Mikhaela Malixi, who carded a total of 279 (70-72-67-70).
