Patience is the key as Ashley prepares to give her best shot in second appearance

KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak professional golfer and Paris Olympian Ashley Lau (pic) is set to swing in the heat at the Maybank Championship at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) starting from Oct 24-27.

“I think it is great that Maybank is doing this for the second time. And for me personally I feel this is a wonderful opportunity to play in our homeground,” said Ashley, who previously played at KLGCC during the first Maybank Championship last year.

“It is a meaningful championship for me again but I remind myself that the key is to be patient and not get overconfident just because I have played here before,” she said.

“I want to make good use of the experience I had last year at the same golf course and give my best shot,” she added.

“I don’t want to put a lot of pressure on myself for this competition, as I know there are a couple of prominent golfers making their first appearance with me.

“For this week, instead of showing admiration, I’ll be focusing on displaying my fighting spirit when I meet golfers I have looked up to since I was a beginner.”

Ashley finds Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul and Australian Hannah Green to be strong contenders for this championship.

“Their experience and potential in golf have always inspired me but this week it will be an interesting challenge and I am looking forward to facing them,” said Ashley, who bagged second place in the Epson Tour Championship earlier this month.

Ashley felt that her game and momentum is strong enough to chase a title in the LPGA championship.

“I have modified some techniques in my swing to get consistent strokes and shots. I hope to play well,” she said.

There will be four local golfers including Ashley participating. The others are Liyana Durisic, Durriyah Damian and Mirabel Ting.

There are a couple of lady golfers making their mark, but Malaysia still needs more.
