THERE’S an exciting new addition to the local calendar with the inclusion of the inaugural Tourism Golf Malaysia Amateur Tournament.

The event is being touted to attract up to 240 local and international golfers, and has been scheduled to take place at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) on July 27 and 28.

Essentially, the tournament has been designed to promote golf tourism across the length and breath of this country.

Organising committee chairman, Datuk Richard Lee, said at the launch of the tournament that it will strive to establish Malaysia as “a golfing destination for all seasons”.

“Malaysia has beautiful golf courses and we want to promote golf tourism here in this country,” he said.

“The event also supports charity, whereby RM20,000 will be set aside for the welfare of the caddies at KLGCC.”

Malaysia has a long and distinguished history of playing host to some of the world’s best players, tournaments, personalities and stakeholders.

Among these are Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Anikka Sorenstam, Se Ri Park, and of the newer generation, Rory McIlroy, Nelly Korda and Jin Young Ko.

In October, KLGCC will stage the second edition of the Maybank Championship, a US$3mil tournament on the LPGA Tour schedule.

The launch of the Tourism Golf Malaysia Amateur Tournament was officiated by Tourism Malaysia director-general Manoharan Periasamy.

Interested persons can join with a fee of RM8,000 per flight of four or eight slots over two days. This includes green fees, shared buggies and caddies, goodies, refreshments, lunch and dinner.

The format of the event will be Stableford System 36 and played on the East course on July 27 and the West course on July 28.

The winners stand a chance to take home a wide range of golf items, including the latest TaylorMade Qi 10 drivers, air tickets and travel vouchers.

A Mazda car will be up for grabs for the golfer who hits a hole-in-one.

The sponsors of the tournament include HSBC Malaysia, Visa, Mazda, KLGCC, AirAsia, Batik Air, BMW, Luen Heng, Carlsberg, MST Golf and CIT Travel.

Star Media Group Bhd and The Edge are the media partners for the event.

There is a limited number of slots, so register without delay, call 012-2618484.
