A PLUGGED lie in a bunker is one of the toughest shots in golf.
Indeed, many of the best players in the world struggle to get control of the ball from here. But do not despair, for all is not lost.
We share a few thoughts here on how to get the ball out of the sand first time, with a handful of set-up and swing tips.
It is important to remember, anywhere on the green should be considered a good result.
Face closed
Keep the ball just inside your back heel for a steep downward blow, with the clubface slightly closed to target, thereby reducing its bounce. As the sharp edge of the toe hits the sand, the resistance opens the face through impact.
Strong wrists
Remember to keep your wrists strong through impact so that the clubhead gets down underneath the ball. It will come out lower without spin, so make sure you aim for the big part of the green.
Steeper backswing
Do not grip the club too tightly. Make a steep three-quarter backswing to encourage a steeper entry about two inches behind the ball – lots of clubhead speed so that you can blast it out.
Square and stable
At address, get your feet square to the target, dig into the sand with most of your weight on the front leg. There should be minimal weight transfer in the backswing to ensure a stable base.
