PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) coach Xisco Munoz was a picture of delight after the Southern Tigers pulled off their first away win over South Korean club Pohang Steelers in the AFC Champions League Elite on Monday.

JDT overcame the formidable strength of their opponents in the 2-0 win, which Munoz attributed to their right tactical approach and ability to neutralise the hosts’ dangerous moves.

“Our strategy was to constantly pressure Pohang’s defence without leaving gaps in midfield for them to exploit while maintaining a high-intensity game,’’ said the Spaniard.

“Ultimately, the players gave a magnificent performance to ensure the win. Tactics were crucial in ensuring our players reacted positively to balance the game and minimise turnovers.

“There were moments where we had to manage specific situations to prevent the opposition from launching dangerous attacks.”

JDT hero Marcos Guilherme, who netted two goals to seal the win, also could not hide his excitement while acknowledging that it had been a tough match.

“We truly deserved to win the match even though it was highly challenging,” said Guilherme, who broke the deadlock in the 49th minute before sealing victory with his second goal in the 89th. It was all the result of hard work and 100 percent commitment.

“We reached the quarter-finals last year and while this season appears more demanding, that is no excuse for us not to aim higher.

“We will strive to maintain our momentum and although it may be difficult, nothing is impossible if we remain consistent throughout the campaign.’’

JDT will next host Thai side Port FC at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Oct 27.
