PETALING JAYA: Indonesia captain Kevin Diks was left disappointed after the final whistle, not by the result, but by the reaction of the home fans following their 0-0 draw against Malaysia in the FIFA Asean Cup.
Harimau Malaya failed to capitalise on a one-man advantage and had to share points with the hosts in their second Group A match at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Monday.
After the match, Diks heard the Indonesian crowd chanting the name of former coach Shin Tae-yong, who was dismissed from the team early last year.
“I think this is not right, this doesn’t feel right,” said the 29-year-old, who plays for Bundesliga club Borussia Moenchengladbach.
“It is not good for the boys, for the coach (John Herdman). Try to fight with 10 men, it is really hard. I’m disappointed with this, it isn’t right, but with ten men, for more than 60 minutes, it is very hard.”
Tae-yong was a popular figure among the Indonesian fans, having led the Garuda from 2020 to 2025 with his exciting brand of football, until he was replaced by Dutch coach Patrick Kluivert during the 2026 World Cup fourth-round qualifiers.
Kluivert failed to bring Indonesia to the World Cup and was replaced with John Herdman in January 2026.
Indonesia will take on Bangladesh in their final group game at the same venue on Thursday while Malaysia will take on Singapore on the same day.
They need a win to reach the final or, at the very least, a place in the third-fourth playoff.
