PETALING JAYA: Young defender Alif Ahmad (pic) was brought into Malaysia’s Hyundai AFF Cup squad as just an understudy to Jimmy Raymond.
But an ankle injury to the first-choice rightback has thrust the 21-year-old into regular action far sooner than expected.
Alif has started two of Malaysia’s last four matches and came off the bench twice.
On Saturday, he will start for the first time in a knockout fixture when Malaysia face Vietnam in the first leg of their semi-final at the Cheras Football Stadium.
Alif knows the assignment will be a stern test, with Vietnam boasting some of the region’s quickest wingers, including Nguyen Quang Hai and Le Van Do.
But the Johor Darul Ta’zim II defender believes he is growing with every match and is determined to prove he has what it takes to become the nation’s top fullback.
“As a youngster, I’m happy to have made it this far,” said Alif.
“I’m really grateful for the opportunity, and I will make the most of it and become a better player.”
Alif credited his teammates and coaching staff for helping him settle into the squad.
“The captain (Paulo Josue) has had the biggest impact on me, along with coach Tan (Cheng Hoe). Paulo always gives us motivational words,” he added.
“Being here is a dream. I’ve been given a lot of minutes and chances, and it’s something I truly cherish.
“I never expected to go from the A1 Semi-Pro League straight into the national team but I’ve been called up, and I see it as a blessing.”
