Quentin proud to be nominated for Best Defender award

PETALING JAYA: Quentin Cheng (pic) is hoping his breakthrough nomination will finally bring the individual recognition he has been chasing after making the top three for the Best Defender award at the 2025-2026 Malaysia League Awards.

After making the top 10 in the previous edition, Quentin’s consistency on the pitch has paid off as the Selangor defensive stalwart makes the top three nominees for the first time.

The 26-year-old said the nomination was a meaningful recognition of his hard work to deliver consistency in the defensive line, while helping the Red Giants finish third in the Super League last season.

“Of course, I’m proud to be nominated because it represents recognition after going through an incredible season with the club,” said Quentin, who made 28 appearances for Selangor last season.

“I feel I’ve worked hard to contribute as much as possible, especially in defence.

“And of course, that has also been made possible through the support and cooperation of my teammates.”

Quentin, however, faces stiff competition for the award from Kuching City’s Rodney Celvin Akwensivie and Terengganu’s Ubaidullah Shamsul Fazili.

“Both my challengers are quality players. We can see just how much they have helped their respective clubs achieve the best possible results,” he said.

“So I’m proud to be nominated alongside them. May the best player win.”

Rodney was instrumental in Kuching City’s historic campaign, which saw them finish runners-up in the Super League and reach the Malaysia Cup final for the first time.

Ubaidullah, meanwhile, helped Terengganu secure fifth place in the league.

The Malaysia League Awards will be held on Wednesday at the Seri Angkasa Auditorium in Kuala Lumpur.
