PETALING JAYA: With dominance being Johor Darul Ta’zim’s (JDT) obsession as they chase a perfect record this season, the Southern Tigers loom like hungry monsters for Kuala Lumpur in their Malaysia Cup semi-final first leg match today.
But the City Boys are determined not to be easy meat in the clash happening at the Cheras Football Stadium.
KL will enter their own backyard with a disciplined and resilient approach to counter JDT’s high-intensity style.
Centreback Giancarlo Gallifuoco believes this semi-final represents more than just another match.
“This is a true test, physically, mentally and in terms of courage, especially against the best team in Malaysia,” he said.
“JDT have aggressive and resilient players who make it difficult for any team to control the game. We must stay focused, disciplined and move as a unit without fear.
“It will be physically demanding, but also very rewarding. Every pass, tackle and header carries more meaning when you are up against the best.”
For all of KL’s positivity, JDT, who have already won the Super League and FA Cup boasting a 100 per cent record, have everything going for them ahead of the game.
And coach Xisco Munoz has warned all rivals that they have no intention of easing up.
“The most important thing is that we continue with the same character, ambition and intensity,” said Munoz.
“I’m incredibly proud of the values this team are showing. We must keep improving and working hard because this is the most demanding period of the season.”
Munoz said that his squad were given a short break during the international window to recharge.
“The players had three or four days off to rest and spend time with their families. When they returned, they came back full of energy because we have exciting challenges ahead.”
With four league matches remaining, JDT are determined to complete a perfect campaign and replicate that feat in the Malaysia Cup.
“We want to finish the season with a perfect record and make history. Achieving this is rare, but it is our goal,” he said.
