PETALING JAYA: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) secretary-general Datuk Seri Windsor Paul has confirmed that the mixed heritage players affected by a recent FIFA ruling can continue playing for their clubs, though their participation in the national team remains uncertain.
The seven suspended Harimau Malaya players had been given a lifeline after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) granted a stay of execution, allowing them to return to football immediately.
In a statement on Monday (Jan 26), the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) confirmed that the stay applies to Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Gabriel Palmero, Jon Irazaba, and Hector Hevel.
The ruling temporarily lifts the 12-month suspension and fines imposed by FIFA, pending CAS’ final decision on FAM’s appeal.
The association had challenged the FIFA sanctions on the mixed-heritage players and the national body over allegedly doctored eligibility documents.
With the suspension on hold, the players are free to resume their professional careers and participate in all football-related activities until CAS delivers its final verdict.
However, Windsor emphasised that confirmation is still needed regarding national team duties.
"What we know is that these players can play for their clubs. However, as to whether they can represent the national team, we are still awaiting more detailed information from FIFA,” he said.
