PETALING JAYA: Faisal Halim (pic) produced a captain’s innings after scoring two goals to help Selangor beat Vietnamese side Cong An Hanoi 2-0 in the Shopee Asean Club Championships Group A game at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Wednesday (Jan 28).
It was also South Korean coach Kim Pan-gon’s fifth straight win in all competitions, proving to be an astute recruitment by the club.
Despite Hanoi having the most possession, the Red Giants were the better side in terms of chances but wished they were more clinical in the first-half.
The second-half though, was the Faisal show.
The 28-year-old fondly known as Mickey broke the deadlock in tbe 59th minute when he capitalised on a loose save from Felip Nguyen, who thwarted Cape Verdean winger Alvin Fortes’ shot.
But the effort wasn't easy as the winger had to take a shot from an acute angle and he did it with his weaker foot, which is his left.
Faisal then got his second in the 68th minute with a stinging drive from outside the box after receiving a pass from French midfielder Hugo Boumous.
Selangor are now top of Group A with eight points from four games, a point ahead of second-placed Thai club BG Pathum United.
The Malaysian club will wrap up their group campaign against BG Pathum at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Feb 4, and a win would guarantee them a spot in the semi-finals.
