Garces returns to Deportivo Alaves after CAS clearance

PETALING JAYA: Spanish club Deportivo Alaves have confirmed that Facundo Garces will be back with the team after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) temporarily lifted his suspension from all football-related activities.

In a statement on Tuesday (Jan 27), the La Liga side confirmed that CAS upheld Garces’ request for provisional suspension in regards to the 12-month sanction imposed by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on Sept 25 last year, and confirmed by the FIFA Appeal Committee on Nov 3.

CAS’ ruling temporarily lifted the suspensions and fines imposed by FIFA, allowing the players to return to football-related activities.

"While this precautionary measure remains in effect, Facundo Garces may continue his professional activities as normal, without prejudice to the CAS’s subsequent decision on the merits of the case," the club said.

"Therefore, the player will rejoin the team’s training sessions."

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) had earlier confirmed that the ruling applied to seven Harimau Malaya mixed-heritage players: Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Gabriel Palmero, Jon Irazabal, and Hector Hevel.

The players will be allowed to resume their professional careers until CAS deliver their final verdict.
