PETALING JAYA: Defending champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) have secured their quarter-final spot in the Malaysia Cup after beating Police 11-1 on aggregate in the last 16.
The Southern Tigers however were made to wait for their goal in the second leg as they etched a slim 1-0 win at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on Saturday (Jan 24).
JDT will take on Melaka in the two legged quarter-finals at the Hang Jebat Stadium on Feb 7 and Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Feb 14.
On Saturday, the home side found it tough to break down the Police side that were determined not to be humiliated again after their 1-10 drubbing in the first leg, also at the same stadium on Jan 18.
Police’s defence led by Safiee Ahmad were resolute enough to absorb JDT’s pressure in the first half and goalkeeper Nur Hakeem Hamidun also made some good saves.
The goal eventually came in the 66th minute when Spanish striker Teto Martin scored from close range after being assisted by Brazilian striker Jairo Da Silva.
Police’s only significant attack came in the 88th minute when Mohd Adam Farhan went on a solo run, only to be denied by JDT goalkeeper Christian Abad, who rushed out to clear the ball.
Before the Malaysia Cup resume, JDT will shift their attention towards the continental stage, where they will take on Myanmar club Shan United in the Shoppee Asean Club Championships at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Jan 28.
