Brunei take commanding lead with 2–0 win over Kelantan in Malaysia Cup


PETALING JAYA: Brunei started on a strong foot in the Malaysia Cup round of 16 after beating Kelantan Red Warriors 2-0 in the first leg match on Saturday (Jan 17).

Ramadhan Sananta scored Brunei’s first goal in the 31st minute at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru before substitute Syafiq Ahmad sealed the win with the second goal three minutes into injury time.

Kelantan would now travel to Bandar Seri Begawan to keep their hopes alive in the second leg match on Jan 24.

Meanwhile, Melaka and Sabah’s clash in their first leg fixture ended in a 2-2 draw.

Melaka’s Sharel Fikri Fauzi got the hosts ahead just three minutes into the match, but Ajdin Mujagic found Sabah’s equaliser in the 15th minute.

Melaka then got ahead once again when South Korean Park Kwang-il scored in the 38th minute.

Sabah scored again late into the match through Fergus Tierney in the 88th minute to ensure things stayed level heading into the second leg match at the Likas Stadium on Jan 22.
