Brundo: Back to square one and hoping for good innings this year

PETALING JAYA: Penang are enduring a difficult Super League campaign, with mounting pressure on head coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail to steer the club back to winning ways.

The Panthers have struggled through the first round of the season, managing just two wins from 12 matches. They currently sit 11th in the standings with eight points, a position that has heightened concerns within the camp.

The northern side know improvements are needed quickly if they are to climb into mid-table and secure a stronger finish than last season. Last year, Penang ended the campaign in 10th, collecting 26 points from 24 matches.

Captain and versatile enforcer Stefano Brundo (pic) is well aware of the pressure surrounding the team, but the Argentinian believes leadership and unity will be key to turning their fortunes around.

“We know we’re not at our best, but we’ve decided to start from scratch and make a promise to ourselves to make 2026 a better year,” said the 32-year-old, who previously featured for Pahang.

“We want to bring more joy to our fans.”

Brundo stressed that belief within the squad remains strong despite the disappointing results so far.

“As I’ve said before, I’m trying to send a message of hope and motivation. We truly believe we can deliver better performances and climb the table in the new year,” he added.

Penang face a stern test today when they travel to the Sultan Mizan Stadium in Gong Badak to take on Terengganu.

A victory could lift the Panthers to 10th place, but the task will be anything but straightforward.

Terengganu are currently fifth in the league with 18 points and remain one of the most dangerous attacking sides in the competition.

Still, Brundo insists Penang are leaving nothing to chance in their preparations.

“We’re preparing thoroughly and paying attention to every detail. We know how dangerous they are, especially going forward, but we’ll look to exploit their weaknesses,” he said.

The skipper also expressed his desire to repay the faith shown by Wan Rohaimi.

“The coach is always trying to solve problems and give us the tools to achieve better results. Now it’s the players’ responsibility to improve the situation and reassure our fans and the coaching staff.”

Off the pitch, Brundo has also grown fond of his new surroundings.

“Penang has been amazing. I knew it was a big city, but I’ve been blown away,” he said.

“I hope to explore more of Penang and Malaysia this year, and most importantly, to bring more joy to our fans, because they deserve better.”
