Kim Swee returns to FAM as NFDP director

PETALING JAYA: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) have confirmed the return of Datuk Ong Kim Swee into their fold - this time as the director of the National Football Development Programme ( DP).

FAM acting president Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi said Kim Swee and the technical committee would now have full authority over all aspects of the programme, including staff and coach appointments, evaluations, and releases.

“Datuk Ong will assess the programme, address past weaknesses, and ensure every move produces better results,” said Yusoff.

“We have full confidence in Kim Swee and the technical team to make decisions based on expertise and the programme’s needs. Every decision must push the programme forward.”

The 55-year-old officially took charge on Dec 1, replacing Oscar Francisco Gonzalez, and has signed a three-year contract to lead the DP.

Kim Swee previously served as FAM’s technical director in 2021 before spending three years in Sabah as head coach.

He also expanded his coaching career abroad, taking charge of Indonesian sides Persis Solo and later Persik Kediri.

Thus, FAM hopes his leadership will accelerate the development of young players nationwide.

“Development programmes take time, usually at least two years, to bear results. KPIs must be higher than before and reviewed annually.

“We cannot simply appoint new personnel while keeping the same targets. Everyone must deliver better outcomes and make a tangible impact,” he added.

Launched in 2014, the DP aims to develop Malaysian football from the grassroots, producing players capable of competing on the international stage.
