Under-23 football team lose to Vietnam as semis fate hinges on Indonesia-Myanmar tie

BANGKOK: Malaysia Under-23 team led by coach Nafuzi Zain lost to Vietnam 2-0 in their final Group B game at the Rajamangala Stadium here on Thursday (Nov 11).

And their hopes of getting to the semi-final will now rest on the final Group C match between Indonesia and Myanmar tomorrow Dec 12).

Only the three group winners and the best runners-up progress to the semi-finals and Malaysia will be hoping for Indonesia to lose. 

Malaysia are second in Group B with three points, a plus-one goal difference and four goals scored.

Indonesia must beat Myanmar with more than two goals to keep their hopes alive and pip Malaysia for the second best runners-up spot. 

In the match against Vietnam, their opponents got the first goal in the 11th minute when Nguyen Hieu Minh capitalised on a poor Malaysian defensive clearance, to give his team the first blood. 

In the 22nd minute, Malaysia were reeling again as Phạm Minh Phuc finished off a superb counter-attack to make it 2-0.
