Though small in size, midfielder stands tall for Harimau Muda

BANGKOK: Haykal Danish Mohd Haizon may be the smallest player in the Harimau Muda squad, but he is playing like a giant in his role in midfield.

The 20-year-old maestro has been turning heads with his slick touches, sharp passes and calm control in the middle of the park in both the national age-group teams and Selangor.

And on Saturday, he showed why size is not a barrier to talent when he helped Malaysia cruise to a 4-1 win over Laos at the Rajamangala Stadium.

Haykal, who stands at 1.64m, did not only shine in his role as an attacking midfielder, but also scored with a deft touch in the 33rd minute.

Malaysia’s other goals came from striker Haqimi Azim Rosli (59th), defender Moses Raj (62nd), and Mohd Abu Khalil (92nd).

Laos’ lone goal was netted by defender Bounpheng Xaisombut in the fourth minute.

Haykal said the goal was a confidence booster.

“Being big doesn’t mean you’re strong. Real strength comes from your spirit and knowing who you are,” he said.

“Use your brain and focus on what you’re good at. And I’m nothing without my teammates. Their support gives me the strength to keep going.”

While Haykal impressed against Laos, the next challenge will be far tougher against a resilient Vietnam side renowned for their tactical discipline and rapid counter-attacks under South Korean coach Kim Sang-sik.

Harimau Muda, coached by former international Nafuzi Zain, will face Vietnam on Thursday.

“Of course we’ve prepared and discussed our tactics for Vietnam, but for me, we must deliver a strong performance and make the most of any opportunities,” said Haykal.

Despite Malaysia’s disrupted preparation due to poor weather and limited player availability during the ongoing domestic season, Haykal is savouring the SEA Games experience.

“I’ve gained so much with the Malaysia Under-23 team because I have experienced coaches like Nafuzi, Shukor (Adan), and Hai O (Hairuddin Omar), all former national players. I’ve learned many new things and the areas I need to improve.”

“I’m also grateful to have teammates who constantly motivate me. I hope to use this opportunity well, return to Selangor, and continue to perform consistently.”
