Safee calls for calm after FIFA sanctions

PETALING JAYA: Times are tough for Harimau Malaya, but former national footballer Safee Sali has urged fans not to hastily heap blame on the national team.

Posting on his social media page, Safee reminded Malaysians to stay united and not tear the team apart following FIFA’s 12-month ban on seven naturalised players and the hefty fine imposed on the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

“FIFA have just released a statement, yet many are already criticising their own country - as if impatient to wait for the facts," said Safee.

"Even someone accused of murder is given the right to an attorney and a chance to defend themselves.

"Nothing has even been proven yet, but many have already resorted to becoming judge and jury.

"When our country is being accused, we should stand together, not blame each other.

"Stand firm first, then judge rationally, not emotionally," said Safee.

On Friday, FIFA sanctioned FAM for allegedly doctoring documents to classify seven players as Malaysians.

The players were each fined 2,000 Swiss francs (RM10,570), while FAM was handed a 350,000 Swiss francs (RM1.85mil) penalty.
