Super League: KL stretch unbeaten run to five games with 4-0 win against Brunei

PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur stretched their unbeaten run in the Super League to five matches after sweeping aside Brunei 4-0 at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium in Bandar Seri Begawan on Monday (Sept 22).

The visitors nearly broke the deadlock in the ninth minute when Syamer Kutty Abba launched a pinpoint 60-metre pass to Safawi Rasid, but the winger’s effort was denied by Brunei goalkeeper Haimie Nyaring.

Four minutes later, Brunei almost struck first. Captain Azwan Ali Rahman released a long pass to Indonesian striker Ramadhan Sananta, whose attempt to slip the ball through the legs of Kuala Lumpur’s Filipino keeper Quincy Kammeraad was kept out.

Ramadhan threatened again in the 18th minute after being played through by Australian forward Jordan Murray, but once more Kammeraad produced a fine stop.

Kuala Lumpur took the lead in the 26th minute thanks to a stroke of fortune. A back pass from defender Yura Indera Putera Yunos was mishandled by Haimie, and the ball trickled into his own net.

After the interval, Kuala Lumpur shifted gears. Spanish playmaker Victor Ruiz doubled the advantage in the 56th minute, before Safawi made it 3-0 seven minutes later with a thunderous left-footed strike from Zhafri Yahya’s pass.

Safawi sealed his brace in the 83rd minute, latching onto a through ball from Ruiz and finishing clinically to complete a dominant performance.

The win keeps Kuala Lumpur second in the league with 13 points from five matches, while Brunei remain bottom with just one point from four games.
