PETALING JAYA: Kuching City showed grit and composure to deliver a statement win, stunning Super League giants Selangor 1-0 at the State Stadium in Kuching yesterday.
In searing conditions, the hosts absorbed waves of pressure before winger Ramadhan Saifullah (pic) struck the decisive blow in the 67th minute, finishing off a clever set-piece routine with Ronald Ngah.
The result was a huge boost for Aidil Sharin’s men, who had to endure some nervy moments before clinching only their second win of the campaign.
“We knew it was never going to be easy against Selangor, but the players kept fighting and we got our reward,” said Aidil.
“Ramadhan had been trying hard and I’m glad he finally got his goal with a brilliant free-kick.
“The weather was a big factor for both teams, but in the second half we showed determination.
“The substitutes came in and made an impact too. It was a well-deserved win.”
The Red Giants, though, will rue their missed chances.
Dutch winger Alvin Fortes tested Kuching goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli with three superb saves in a six-minute spell early in the second half, but the visitors still could not break through.
Selangor coach Katsuhito Kinoshi admitted it was a frustrating night but refused to fault his players.
“They fought hard and I cannot blame them. One set-piece changed the game,” he said.
“We’ve some injuries and a packed schedule, so recovery is the priority. Then we will assess who is fit to play. We’ll continue with our attacking style and hopefully bounce back quickly.”
