Ruthless JDT roar as Bergson makes history

PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) had a night to remember as they recorded their sixth win in a row, eight goals without reply and a new all-time Super League top scorer.

The 11-time champions were ruthless at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on Sunday (Sept 21), thrashing Sabah 8-0.

Brazilian forward Fernando Figueiredo hit a brilliant hattrick but it was his strike partner Bergson Da Silva who stole the spotlight.

The 33-year-old also scored three goes, taking his tally to 109 goals and cementing his place as the Super League's all-time top scorer.

Spanish wingback Oscar Arribas opened the floodgates in the fifth minute after being set up by Figueiredo, cutting inside before firing past Khairul Fahmi Che Mat.

Six minutes later, Figueiredo latched onto Arribas' through ball, rounding Khairul and slotting into an empty net.

The Brazilian doubled his tally in the 23rd minute, finishing off an Arif Aiman Hanapi cross from the right before Raul Parra drilled home the fourth just before half time after a poor Sabah clearance.

Figueiredo then completed his hattrick in stoppage time with a back heel from an Arribas pass that left Khairul stranded.

After the break, Bergson took centre stage. He converted a 61st minute penalty to surpass Indra Putra Mahayuddin's long-standing record of 106 goals, before heading in another from an Arif corner in the 73rd. He capped the night with a poacher's finish in injury time to seal his historic milestone.

The emphatic win keeps JDT top of the league with 18 points from six games, 26 goals scored and just three conceded. Sabah remain 10th with three points from four outings.
